Shane Lowry shoots bogey with US fans after answering kids’ citizenship question

“My six-year-old was with me and she picked up this American flag and started waving it and I’m like 'put that down”

Shane Lowry gets in hot water over 'kids are Irish' comment

Shane Lowry made a bogey with a few of his American fans after he appeared to be dismissive of the US.

Even though he lives in the States with his family including daughters Iris and Ivy, the golf star and his wife Wendy, who have been together since 2012 are both from Offaly.

As a proud Irishman, Shane isn’t seeking US citizenship for his children who he is choosing to raise as Irish.

However, in a light-hearted chat with the TikTok user Golf Tips for the Average Joe, Shane was, perhaps, too quick to shut down any suggestion that his children might be American.

"No. Hell no," he laughed when asked if they were citizens.

"I had to go to Home Depot the other day to get something and my six-year-old was with me and she picked up this American flag and started waving it and I’m like 'put that down’.”

While he obviously didn’t intend to offend anyone, some US fans took exceptions to his remark.

"Go back to Ireland then," one replied.

"Ya, disrespect the country that has made you millions," another added.

"Takes our money and trashes the country. Hypocrisy," a third added.

Others, however, sided with Shane who saw that he was merely expressing his pride in being Irish.

"Why are some people upset?” one wondered, “it’s not that deep, have a laugh,” while another added: ‘Proud Irishman right there.’

Lowry was back in Ireland over the Christmas period as his brother Alan tied the knot.

Alan and his partner Amy said ‘I do’ in a gorgeous ceremony at the Mount Falcon Hotel in Ballina, Co Mayo at the beginning of this year.

It’s not the first time that Shane has found himself out of odds with the culture in his adopted home.

Last year, he was left confused and a little bemused during an interview ahead of the final event of the FedEx Cup.

It was soon after Manchester rock giants Oasis had ended their long-running feud and confirmed they would be playing a host of concerts next summer, including a couple of nights at Croke Park in Dublin.

So when he was asked by FanDuel presenter Ali McCann to name the celebrity he would most like to grab a beer with, Irish Ryder Cup hero Lowry was quick to suggest the Oasis brothers.

"I'd love to have a drink with Oasis," Lowry said. "You know Oasis are back together?"

A confused McCann replied: "I don't even know..."

"You don't know who Oasis are?” Lowry responded. "Oh my god... you're obviously way younger than me.

"This is like the biggest news ever. You need to look them up."

McCann looked embarrassed as she replied: "I'm so sorry, I'll do that immediately after this."

Lowry saw the funny side of the exchange as he added: "She doesn't know Oasis, blasphemy."

McCann said: "No, no, I'm sorry. I just ruined this whole interview. I'm so sorry."
