A man is due to appear in court following a six-hour stand-off with counter terrorism police in Belfast.

Police confirmed the 32-year-old has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, and is due to appear in Belfast Magistrates court today.

The stand-off occurred in the Canterbury Street area of the city in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

At the time police were called to the scene after reports of an assault shortly after midnight.

The man was later arrested at the scene following negotiations with police.

Though the incident is believed to not be terror related, counter terrorism was called in for their ability to work at height, after the man made his way to the roof of a property during the incident.

“The charges follow an incident in the Canterbury Street area in the early hours of Wednesday, 16th July,” said a police spokesperson.

“As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.”
