Man charged after 12-year-old boy dies in hit-and-run crash involving scooter in Co Down

A man has been charged to court following the death of a 12-year-old boy in a hit-and-run crash involving a scooter in Co Down.

The incident occurred in the Strand area of Portaferry.

"Detectives investigating a fatal hit-and-run road traffic collision in the Strand area of Portaferry on Tuesday evening, July 8 have charged a man to court,” said a PSNI spokesperson.

"A young boy who was riding a scooter in the area, sadly died from his injuries after he was involved in a collision with a red Skoda Fabia.

"The 51-year-old has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, and other driving-related offences.”

The man is due to appear before Newtownards Magistrates' Court on Friday, July 11.

As is usual procedure, all charges are reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
